Vancouver style

Vancouver is a numbered referencing style commonly used in medicine and science, and consists of:

  • citations in the text, using numbers, i.e.,  1, 2, 3, 4 etc.
  • a numbered reference list at the end of the document.

The Vancouver style of referencing requires journal titles to be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus.

In EndNote these abbreviations are contained in the Medical Journals term list supplied with your EndNote software, and located in C:\Program Files\EndNoteX7\Terms Lists.  To use the abbreviations you need to:

  1. Import the Medical Journals term list into your EndNote library
  2. Modify the chosen output style to use the abbreviated journal title when formatting your bibliography.

Modifying the output style to display abbreviations

  • From the Edit menu, select Output Styles, and Edit "Vancouver" (or your selected style).
