Downloading references

ACLS Humanities E-Book

  • The Library recommends manual data entry of records from ACLSHumanitites. Alternatively, use a second search like Summon or Google Scholar .

To download a record from AustLit:

  • Run your search.
  • Select Works.
  • Click on Export.
  • All the records will already be selected. If you wish to select specific records, click Un/Check All, and then click in the check box next to the record(s) you wish to download.
  • Select the the downloads R (first R to the left- option for 'Download checked results as RIS file for Import into Zotero and Endnote (Works Only)').

  • Run your search.
  • Select the references you wish to export by clicking the  folder icon to the right of each citation.
  • Click on Folder at the top of the screen.
  • Click in the check box beside each item you wish to export.
  • Click on the Export icon on the right.
  • Click in the radio button next to the words Direct Export in RIS Format.
  • Click on the Save button.

Note: for full range of options you may wish to register and create an Emerald Profile. To create a Profile, click on the Register link in the top right hand corner of the screen and follow the instructions.

  • In the Emerald homepage or Advanced search run your search.
  • Tick the box next to each item of relevance. Next to 'For selected articles' select Download citation
  • Select Endnote.
  • Click on Download article citation data

Engineering Village

  • Run your search.
  • Click in the check boxes next to records of interest.
  • Click on Download above the Search results.
  • In the window that appears, click in the radio button next to RIS (EndNote, Ref. Manager). Check the Location and Output is correct.
  • Click Save.

Gale databases

  • Run your search.
  • Click in the Mark check box next to records you wish to import. When you click in the Mark check box next to a record, a new menu item appears on the right: Saved Documents.
  • Click on the Saved Documents>View All link and then click on Citation Tools.
  • Under Export, select EndNote.

Google Scholar

  • Note: References from Google Scholar can only be imported one at a time.
  • Run your search.
  • A list of results will appear. For each relevant result either (depending on your settings) click on Import into EndNote, or Cite and then EndNote.

Direct export works well with some Informit databases and poorly with others. Check your references once they are in your library.

  • Run your search.
  • Click on the check boxes beside the records which you wish to download. Click on Save.
  • This will display the Save Records screen.
  • Under Output Format, use the drop-down menu to select EndNote Direct. Click on Save.

Library Search

Quality of data import can vary- ensure that you check every EndNote record after each export.

  • Run your search.
  • Click on Details (or View It). Click on Actions and select EndNote (RIS).
  • A pop-up box will open 'Import to Citation Manager' (Encoding: UTF-8). Click OK.

Medline on PubMed

  • Click on the check boxes next to the citations you wish to download.
  • Go to the Send to pull-down menu.
  • Select File.
  • Under Format, select MEDLINE.
  • Click Create File.
  • This may import straight into your EndNote Library.
  • If this does not import in, save the file somewhere easily accessible such as your desktop (we recommend that you save it with the file extension *.txt).
  • In EndNote, open the library and click on File and Import.
  • In the Import Options field, select the Other Filters... option and select this import filter PubMed (NLM).
  • Choose your  downloaded *.txt file.
  • Click the Import button and your references will be imported.

  • Run your search.
  • Tick the check boxes next to the references that you wish to export.
  • When you have finished making your choices, click on Export/Save link immediately above your list of results, and select the Endnote, Citavi, or Reference Manager option.
  • In the Export/Save dialog box which appears, select the relevant content option, and then click Continue.

Important note

Whenever you download references into your EndNote library make sure you check that the new references have moved across correctly before merging them with your existing library.

Sometimes there are known problems with the different releases of EndNote software. The EndNote site provides updates to correct these.

Downloading with Browsers

When downloading references in Firefox,

  • Note that you can set up Firefox to skip this step in future and send exports from the database straight to your EndNote Library by choosing to select 'Do this automatciallly'.
  • Next to Open with click on Choose
  • Choose the EndNote X7 application. Click on open. Now click OK.  The downloads will be imported into your EndNote library.
  • If the download does not work properly and does not go straight into Endnote, try closing (or quitting) the EndNote application if it is open, and then repeating.
  • If the download is still not working properly, instead of Open with Choose/EndNoteX7, instead try Save File. The file will go into your Downloads folder. See Safari notes below on using Files from the Downloads folder.

When downloading references in Safari,

  • The record file automatically goes into your Download folder. Go to the download folder either on the Dock or in the Finder window, drag the file and drop it on the EndNote program icon.
  • Select the library if prompted and the file should appear in the library.
  • If the download doesn't work, close the EndNote application and try again.
  • Another workaround is to save the file to your computer, then go to EndNote, choose File>Import, locate the downloaded file, and open it after ensuring that the Import Option is set to Multi-Filter (Special) or other relevant filter or import option.
  • To make downloading into EndNote easier, try adding the EndNote application to your Dock. To do this, open EndNoteX7. It will appear in the Dock. To pin it there, Control click on the EndNote icon in the Dock, click on Options, and select Keep in Dock.
