EndNote and Word
EndNote works in conjunction with your word processor so that you can insert references as you type a document. A bibliography it will automatically be generated. If you have a compatible version of Microsoft Word installed on your computer, installing the EndNote software will also install extra options/files into Word. This is the Cite While You Write add-in (CWYW). The appearance of the EndNote tools in Word will vary, according to the version of Word you are using. The following examples are using Word for Mac 2011.
Top 3 Things to Remember When Using EndNote with Word
- Use one EndNote library for all of your writing and use EndNote groups to manage your references. References used in one document should NOT come from different EndNote libraries.
- Use the Edit & Manage Citation command to make changes to citations in documents. Do NOT use the [Delete] key on the keyboard to remove the citations.
- If you are using footnote styles, your word processor controls the numbering and placement of the footnote and EndNote controls the formatting. So you will first need to insert the footnote using your word processor, then insert the EndNote citation into that footnote.
Access the EndNote functions in Word through the Tools menu.
You can also customise Word so that the most used EndNote functions appear on a floating EndNote toolbar. From the View menu go to Toolbars and then select EndNote.
The toolbar can be moved on the screen by dragging from the bottom left corner.
Cite While You Write
EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) feature gives you direct access to your references while writing in Microsoft Word. The CWYW commands enable EndNote to do bibliographic formatting to the document that is currently open in Word. In this guide we are using Word for Mac 2011.
