Welcome to the History Guide

The University Library has many resources that will help you with your studies.

Use this guide to find books, journal articles and other resources for your assignment or research.


Subject Headings

Library resources can be searched a number of ways, such as by titles, authors, subjects and call numbers.

Searching Subject Headings is a useful; method to find books on a topic. Go to the 'Browse' function of the Library Search (if needed click on the 'Search' button from the Library homepage without entering any text into the search field. Now select 'Subject' from the drop down menu, then enter topic words.

The key subject heading for the First World War is:

World War, 1914-1918.

There are many subdivisions such as:
World War, 1914-1918 -- Australia (see also other subdivisions such as -- Great Britain, -- Campaigns, -- Causes, -- Literature and the war, -- Participation, Australian, -- Peace -- Personal narratives, Australian).

More subject headings:

Australia -- History 1914-1918.
Australia -- History, Military -- 1914-1918.
Australia. Army. Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
Australia. Army. Australian Imperial Force (1914-1921)
Australia -- Armed Forces -- History.
Anzac Day -- History.
Military nursing -- Australia.
Soldiers -- Australia.

You might also search for subject headings on specific battles. For example:

Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkey) History, Military 20th century.
Somme, 2nd Battle of the, France, 1918.
Somme (France) History, Military.
Australia. Army Medical care -- Turkey -- Gallipoli Peninsula.
Australians -- Warfare -- France -- Somme.


Recommended readings and exam papers

Recommended journal articles, book chapters and exam papers are available online through eReserve & exam papers. Enter the author or title of a specific item in the first field or enter the unit code in the second field to see all items for that unit.


Using Search

Library content can be searched a number of ways, such as by titles, authors, subjects and call numbers. Help using Search is available online.

To find material about a particular topic try a Subject search. Use the advanced search and choose Subject (instead of Any) from the pull-down menu. The library uses standardised subject headings for this type of search rather than Keywords.

Some suggestions for useful subject searches are:

australia - history

australia - discovery and exploration

new south wales - colonization

convict ships

aboriginal australians - history

land settlement - australia

emigration and immigration

federal government - australia - history

race relations - australia

Sydney (NSW) - history

australia - politics and government


To find works by a particular author, try an Author search eg Flinders, Matthew. To find critical or biographical information about an author and his/her works, do a Subject search such as Flinders, Matthew
